In a world where young Black girls face unique challenges—from negative influences on social media to the lack of positive role models—the #DefyTheOdds Program is here to fill the gap. We recognize that our girls need more than encouragement—they need a community that uplifts them, a roadmap to success, and mentors who believe in their potential. At the heart of this program lies a commitment to cultural awareness, ensuring that participants understand the richness of their heritage and the strength embedded in their history. By connecting them to their roots, we empower them to carry forward the legacy of resilience and excellence that defines their identity. Through cultural education, leadership development, and a supportive sisterhood, the #DefyTheOdds Program equips young girls with the tools they need to navigate life confidently and proudly embrace who they are.

Expand Their Horizons: Gain a deep understanding of African American history and the journey from Emancipation to Excellence through cultural education. Participants engage in Juneteenth workshops, storytelling, and hands-on projects that celebrate the richness of their heritage. By connecting them to their roots, the program empowers girls to carry forward the legacy of resilience and pride, equipping them to become cultural ambassadors in their schools and communities.
What is the #DefyTheOdds Program?
The #DefyTheOdds Program is a transformative 3-month mentorship and leadership experience designed for young Black girls aged 11-18. Running from April to June, this dynamic initiative empowers participants with essential life skills, cultural pride, and the confidence to lead with purpose. Participants are guided through a dynamic curriculum that emphasizes:

18 Engaging Workshops: Covering topics such as self-identity, social responsibility, mental wellness, and professional development.

Historic Field Trip: Designed to inspire and educate, these trips expose participants to impactful experiences and environments. Fosters a full-circle experience, capturing the Juneteenth 101 Series lessons.

In-Depth Cultural Awareness Experience: Understanding the richness of African American history and heritage. (ie Juneteenth Projects)

Community Service: Giving back through impactful projects that foster pride and purpose.
At the program's culmination, participants take the stage at the Miss Juneteenth Virginia™ Legacy Awards, where they are celebrated for their achievements. While winners advance to represent Virginia on a national platform, all participants remain part of the Royal Court, engaging in parades, community events, and special appearances throughout the remainder of the year (April to December).
This program is much more than a mentorship initiative or its award pageant—it’s a sisterhood, a connection to and through, aa journey that transforms young women into confident leaders who are proud of their heritage and are better prepared to navigate the challenges of today’s world. While the crown is a celebratory recognition of their journey and achievements, the true value lies in the mentorship experience itself—fostering growth, resilience, and a deep connection to their heritage. By the end of the program, participants not only gain the opportunity to elevate to a national platform but leave with a solid foundation for leadership, lifelong skills, and pride in who they are.

From Lost to Leading: A Blueprint for Greatness
A Transformative Program for Boys Aged 10-18
Today’s young Black boys face challenges that can feel insurmountable—peer pressure, the influence of digital media, and a lack of cultural connection leave many feeling lost and disconnected. Without guidance, they may struggle to find their purpose and embrace their potential.
The Legacy in Motion Initiative is here to change that. Designed to educate and empower young men through mentorship, life skills, and cultural awareness, this program bridges the gap between who they are and who they’re destined to become. Through a powerful combination of guidance, interactive workshops, and cultural education, we inspire participants to lead with confidence, embrace their heritage, and build a foundation for greatness.

Young Black boys and girls are growing up in a time where social media, societal pressures, and limited representation threaten their sense of identity, self-worth, and potential.
